Beyond audit
Accounting, tax and SMSF administration
Compliance handled on a known timetable, and advice given before a transaction rather than after it.
Alongside the audit practice, Houston & Co acts as the day-to-day accountant for companies, trusts, self-managed super funds, not-for-profits and family groups. These services are provided to clients we do not audit — independence rules mean we cannot do both for the same entity, and we do not blur that line.
Company and trust compliance
Annual financial statements, income tax returns, and the ASIC and ATO obligations that go with running a company or trust — prepared on a timetable you know in advance.
Tax advisory
Structuring, Division 7A, CGT and small business concessions, trust distributions and resolutions, and the tax consequences of a transaction considered before it happens rather than after.
SMSF administration
Fund accounting, member statements, pension and contribution documentation and annual returns for trustees who want the fund run properly. Audited independently, never by us.
Business advisory
Management reporting, cash flow, budgeting and the periodic conversation about whether the numbers are going where you intended.
Individuals and family groups
Personal returns, rental and investment income, capital gains, and coordination across a family group so the pieces are consistent.
Not-for-profit and charity reporting
ACNC annual information statements, tiered financial reporting, DGR and endorsement matters, and preparation for the audit or review that follows.
Working with us
A compliance year that runs to a plan
You get the year's obligations mapped out at the start of it — what is due, when, and what we need from you to hit each date. Nothing lands as a surprise in the last week of the deadline.
Common questions
Can you do our tax work if you also audit us?
No. Preparing the financial statements or tax returns of an entity we audit creates a self-review threat under APES 110. Where we act as auditor we stay in that role, and we are happy to work alongside your existing accountant.
Do you take on individual tax returns?
Yes, generally as part of a family or business group rather than in isolation, so the group's positions stay consistent.
Can you take over an SMSF that another firm administers?
Yes. We will review the deed, the prior year financials and the last audit report before quoting so there are no surprises in the first year.
How are accounting fees charged?
Compliance work is fixed fee on an annual scope. Advisory work is quoted per engagement. Either way you know the figure before we start.
